Fastnet Celebrates Engineers Week

Did you know that it is Engineers Week from 2nd to 8th March?  Engineers Week is a nationwide festival of engineering coordinated by STEPS in Engineers Ireland. It is particularly special because it encourages EVERYONE to get involved – from industry leaders to students in local primary schools.  The theme is ‘Engineering our Future’ and Fastnet is looking forward to shining the spotlight on our engineers and engineering through blogs, school & college visits, and volunteering.

On Sunday, March 3rd Fastnet colleagues Laura Curtin and Edgar Strakovskij volunteered at Cork’s Lifetime Lab, who hosted a ‘Meet the Engineers’ Family Fun Day.  Activities included driving VEX robots, LEGO construction challenges, connecting snap circuits, following engineering trails, and lots more.  The event ran from 11am to 4pm. Hundreds of children and adults enjoyed a series of stands and activities discovering the many roles of engineering.  This was a fantastic opportunity to experience first hand the impact the Lifetime Lab had on Cork and learn about the role engineering played over the decades.

Over the course of Engineers Week, Fastnet will be shining the spotlight on our engineers.  John McCarthy, Project Engineer NPI with DePuy, and Tatiana Ryan, Project Manager with APC, will share with us why they chose engineering as a career, give us an insight into a typical day, and what advice they would give to the next generation.

In addition, Éimhín O’ Driscoll, Operations Director, will visit Scoil Nicolais’ 6th class and talk about the great Irish women who have made an impact on engineering and science.  Our Talent Consultants will be participating in Waterford Institute of Technology's Science Career Day.

Finally, our colleague Sinead Casey will give us a snapshot of what it is like to work in the Engineering Business Unit in Fastnet.
