The Power of First Impressions

02/07/2016

‘You have 7-17 seconds to impress me – Go!’ This is essentially the task we set for a person when meeting them for the first time according to a recent infographic (featured below) published by Davitt Corporate Partners - a Dublin-based consultancy on corporate psychology. The data was gathered from over 2000 business leaders who shared their views on the power of first impressions at interviews.

We have long known about the power of first impressions. It does not just apply to candidate interviews, it applies to face to face meetings, virtual meetings as well as our life out of work. So why do we still make mistakes in this area?

Just because you did ok in your last interview or meeting does not mean you will do well in your next one. Luckily we can be aware of the triggers that can cause a less than favourable result and train ourselves to avoid them to give us the best possibility of a positive first impression.

Findings:

First impressions are formed within 7 to 17 seconds of meeting someone.
38% of a person’s first impression is determined by tone of voice.
55% of a first impression is what you wear, how you act and how you walk through the door.
26% of interviewees have a weak handshake.
Only 7% of your first impression is the words you say.
