Fastnet team rolls up their sleeves at Good Shepherd Cork

19/08/2019

Good Shepherd Cork is a charity that is very close to our hearts at Fastnet – The Talent Group® and we were delighted to spend a day volunteering last Thursday rolling up our sleeves and getting stuck into some cleaning and organising at their Grattan Street location.

Good Shepherd Cork is a registered charity, whose mission is to empower vulnerable women and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, with the objective of breaking the cycle of homelessness.   For over forty years, the organisation’s good work has extended from emergency accommodation to residential care for teenage girls, long term supported housing, education & development, and ongoing support and advocacy. In addition, it offers education and further support to help women and teenage girls who have let home or school early to develop their skills and reach their full potential as individuals.

While Fastnet – The Talent Group® has supported Good Shepherd Cork for many years it was great for our whole team to experience the facility at Grattan Street first-hand. This is an incredible organisation who provide much needed support to vulnerable people and families. We have all heard the statistics but when you read the real stories about real people and also how many are turned away from services it is heart-breaking.

We spent the day helping with practical chores such as cleaning and organising the food storage, playroom and linen areas. In addition, the team met with Good Shepherd Cork volunteers to gain a greater understanding around their work and identified ways Fastnet – The Talent Group® can support the volunteers and residents with preparing for employment.

Commenting on the volunteering experience Jennifer O’Brien, Senior HR & Talent Management Consultant, said “I really enjoyed our day volunteering at Good Shepherd Cork – Edel House. It brought home to me the reality of the situation these women and children are in and how lucky I am to have a roof over my own head”.

Managing Partner Niamh O’Driscoll said “In the midst of hectic work and home lives it can be difficult to find a day to put aside and help others who are less fortunate. The Fastnet team is delighted that it did, and we look forward to supporting Good Shepherd Cork and the wonderful work they do long into the future!”.
